“Mamá, I can’t go to the bathroom because there is a frog on the toilet!” Marcus. 2:00 am.

We decided to move from Ubud to Perenenan. Since Bali is new to us, we thought we would explore a different area for another month before settling into a more permanent home.

Perenenan is a quiet, small beach area west of Ubud and just north of Canggu and Echo Beach, aka surfer’s paradise. There is no jungle here but there are plenty of rice fields all the way down to the beach.

We are settled and happy enjoying our new home for the month and life continues to unfold through fulfilling experiences.

Last week after class, our kids gave us an impromptu tour of Green School and we were once again fascinated by the learning opportunities that they are being exposed to. They proudly showed us all the farm animals, and explained to us how to care for them: pigs, cows, bunnies, an aviary… You name it! They gave us a lesson on Aquaponics while showing us the area devoted to this symbiotic relationship between fish and plants by which fish waste turns into organic food for a vegetable garden. Pretty cool! They brought us to see the vortex. A fantastic way of generating electricity by diverting and “spinning” the water from the river before returning back with no impact to the environment. Eventually, the vortex will get the school completely off the grid! They proudly walked us across the bridges over the river and were fascinated telling us how the middle school kids had designed one of them. We got to eat hot chili peppers from the endless vegetable garden that they all help to grow and that feeds the school kids, parents and staff every day (we have developed a true love for chili peppers over the last few months and we cannot live without them!). We got to admire the compost station and the bee project and the yoga studio… And all three of them were so pleased to share their knowledge with us, they were so empowered by their learning and so proud of their school! It was truly a magical afternoon.

Also this past week, while the kids were at school, Jeff and I had the opportunity to join other Green School parents at a stunning water temple for a beautiful Cleansing Ceremony. We had the honor to be blessed with the Holy Water brought by the Holy Eagle from the neighboring island of Java, at a time when the Hindus had to flee the island before they settled in Bali. We got to drink it and bathe in it and we were able to participate in this beautiful ceremony like true Balinese people. We were invited to pray to the God that creates us, the God that protects us and the God that will destroy us, with beautiful chanting and offerings. It was an unforgettable experience…

Bali’s interesting history, nurturing culture, rich traditions, natural beauty and extraordinary people amaze us every day and we could not feel more fortunate to be here.

Terima Kasih!

Off to Singapore for the weekend

We just came back from a weekend in Singapore! Apparently I missed that geography lesson at school when I was a kid, so I have to admit that (embarrassingly) I assumed that Singapore was part of Malasia. Oops! it turns out that Singapore became its own country after their independence from the brits 50 years ago hence why their official language is English (sort of), much to our surprise, given the ethnicity of the inhabitants: Chinese, Malay and Hindi.

Coming from Bali (and Thailand) Singapore was a shock to our system: ultra clean, ultra orderly, ultra regimented, ultra civilized… very surreal. The Switzerland of Asia! We stayed at a wonderful hotel by Marina Bay Sands (thank you for your recommendations, Gigi!) with a fantastic pool and an even better breakfast with LOTS of delicious cheeses… quite scarce in Bali 🙂

It was just a weekend visit but we think we got a good sense of the city. Singaporeans have lots of incentives not to own a car. The government charges outrageous taxes on privately owned vehicles: how does 100% tax on your vehicle sounds? plus how about another S$60.000 extra for a 10 year permit to drive your vehicle? May I also mention that you must obtain the permit through a lottery system because there are only so many permits issued by the government? Interestingly, there are no old cars on the streets but instead mostly high end new vehicles -Singapore is the second biggest exporter of used cars after Japan. But at least Singaporeans do have great, easy and inexpensive public transportation and no traffic jams (since not that many people own cars) making it a great city to get around.

We were amazed at the quantity of shopping malls all over town. Singapore is a haven for shoppers. Mall after mall, any brand you can think of and products all across the board: fashion, electronics, beauty, home furnishings, accessories… lots of anything and everything.

Singapore is also a heaven for foodies with an endless offer of cuisines from all over the world. We had the most amazing dinner in Little India and Clara relished her whole fried fish Japanese style for lunch at a foodcourt on Orchard Road, the main shopping drag in Singapore. We also enjoyed the wonderful Arab neighborhood on Beach Road full of delicious smells of the Middle East.

Singapore has no boundaries when it comes to architecture. Buildings erupt all over in all shapes, textures and heights. Truly a feast for your senses if Architecture is one of your passions.

We accidentally ended up visiting the aquarium which turned out to be terrific, even though we were reprimanded for sitting on the floor because in Singapore it is not acceptable to do that… now we know!

We can’t really figure out what Singapore’s soul is, we were amused by how wary and suspicious Singaporeans are in general and it was surprising to see how new and pristine everything was (to the point that we never had a Singaporean Dollar in our hands that looked like it had been used before!). We didn’t really know where we fit really, but regardless we had a fantastic time.

Now back to Bali… Home sweet home 🙂

Straight from another great day at Green School to the airport... not a good idea... We were worried he was not going to be allowed on the plane!
